Yes, you can change your filing status.

Here's how to do this in TurboTax Online:

1. While logged into your TurboTax account, navigate to the left of the screen, under 2024 Taxes, choose My Info

2. At the top of the screen, under Your Info appears your name, click your name to expand options, then choose Edit

3. Continue through the interview pages until you arrive at About your household

4. Answer the question "What was your marital status on December 31, 2024? to change your filing status

I can I fix my filing status

Hello, I have done all of the suggestions and the Head of Household filing status still does not display. I filed as HOH for the past few years and it is difficult to get that filing status each year. It is very frustrating.

If you meet all of the requirements to be considered Head of Household, I suggest going back through your screens and make sure you have answered the questions properly.

In general, you must meet the following requirements to qualify as Head of Household:

  1. You are unmarried on the last day of the tax year
  2. You paid more than half of your household expenses
  3. You live with a qualified person that you can claim as a dependent for more than half of the year (if that dependent is your child) or the whole year (if other than your child)
  4. You cannot be claimed on someone else's return tax

TurboTax asks you various questions about these requirements to determine if you qualify as Head of Household.

You can revisit these questions by going to Personal profile (if you are using TurboTax Online) or Personal Info (if you are using TurboTax Desktop), and then selecting "Edit" next to your name or your dependent's name.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, your screens determining Head of Household status will look like this:

If your dependent is your child, they must have lived with you more than half of the year. ‌If your dependent is other than your child, they must have lived with you the whole year.

Your dependent must not have paid for more than half of their living expenses.

Your dependent lived with you more nights than they lived with their other parent.

Your home was the main home for your child, stepchild, or foster child for at least 6 months of the tax year.

Your dependent cannot be claimed by their other parent.

You must have paid for more than half of your dependents' living expenses.

If you are using TurboTax Online your screens will look like this:
