Deductible College Supplies
If a taxpayer wants to deduct college supplies on his tax return, the items must be necessary for attending the school. This applies to books, writing instruments, backpacks and other school supplies. For example, if a taxpayer must purchase a specific textbook for a class, he can include the cost of that book in his college expenses for the year. Generally, items that are listed on course syllabus forms are deductible, since the instructors require students to purchase these supplies for their classes.
