I am unable to file due to error with my 1099-misc. I filled out the blanks to match fields on my 1099-misc, and it adds it to my 'Your Income' but it won't let me file.

I filled in the 1099-misc questions in Turbo to match exactly what is on my 1099-misc form, and the total earnings amount appears on the 'Your Income' list just fine, which seems to be correct, and no errors when I work that section, but then when I go to file, Turbo runs it's check and says I have an error and makes me go back in answer more questions, which raises my taxes by more than half the amount earned, plus it adds another income line to the 'Your Income' sheet as if I am self employed and earned this amount again ... I just have the one 1099-misc and it was just a side odd-job, I have nothing to do with the business so none of the questions make sense, plus it is counting the income twice I think?  I even tried to file without satisfying the Turvo check, but it won't let me.  It's like I have to have it as a 1099-misc and it also wants to make me have this self-employment income where it assumes I own the business where I made money.  All I did was pop popcorn part time for a nephew's business.  the 1099-misc has all the right info ... only box 7 is filled in for $3227; it has their payer's TIN and box 17 shows KY's State payer ID.  What am I doing wrong?  I don't want it to show that I earned this twice (but even if I do, Turbo keeps asking me the same questions) almost like I'm stuck in a loop because the questions don't make sense for what this was for.  Thanks for any help.

If you have a Form 1099-MISC with box 7 completed then you are considered an independent contractor.  Your nephew is required to provide a Form 1099-MISC if the recipients income is $600 or more.

You will need to prepare a Form 1040 Schedule C-EZ or Schedule C.  The TurboTax program will prepare the applicable form according to the information that is entered. The questions may appear as though you owned the business, but they are related to the work that you were assigned.

Because you are considered self-employed, you can deduct business expenses (mileage, parking, etc.) related to your job that will help reduce the income earned. No matter how minimal, you should always report any expenses that will offset your income. Furthermore, you will not be subject to self-employment tax if your net income is less than $400.00.

If you believe that you were an employee, then you should confer with your nephew so that the correct information statement (Form W-2) is issued.

Your answer is very helpful; however, even when I go thru all the Turbo questions (several times as it seems to be a loop), and I think I'm finished, I continue to do the check/verify and Turbo repeatedly returns me to the form, pointing out a field under Box 7 (that my 1099-MISC doesn't have .. and tells me to complete the form ... it doesn't not believe I'm done.  So I still can't file.  Even if I skill the verify and try to file, it won't let me ... I've already paid for Turbo and given my bank info.  Any ideas?  Is there an 800# to call Turbo to see if it is a bug?

I am having this EXACT problem right now. Did you ever figure out how to resolve it?

Income reported in box 7 on a 2019 form 1099-MISC is normally considered self-employment income. As such, it is subject to a self-employment tax of about 15%, which is in addition to your normal income tax. That may be why your tax increased so much when you answered questions regarding the income reported on the form.

You may also be counting the income twice, however, so you need to check on that by reviewing your form 1040 entries as follows:

1. Find the "Tax Tools" option on your left menu bar and click on it

2. Click on "Tools"

3. Click on "View Tax Summary"

4. On the left menu bar see the option "Preview my 1040" and click on it to view form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3

If your form 1099-MISC income is reported as "other income" it would show up on line 8 of schedule 1. If it is being reported as self-employment income, it will show on line 3 of schedule 1. So, you need to see if you have entries on both those lines, if so you probably doubled up the income.
