I am seeking help. I have a tax obligation (amount due) from 2020 I received in the mail and I’m not sure what to do? 2020 was my first time filing taxes on my own.

I am seeking help. I have a tax obligation (amount due) from 2020 I received in the mail and I’m not sure what to do? 2020 was my first time filing taxes on my own as a full-time student/full-time resident in Missouri. I was a student at the University of Missouri at that time, but have since graduated and reside (currently) in Illinois. I filed a federal and a MO state tax return in 2021 (for 2020 taxes), and subsequently received a letter from the Illinois Department of Revenue stating I owe $215 to the state of IL, along with extra fees/charges now. I didn’t receive a single dollar of earned income in Illinois in 2020. Due to COVID I had unearned income that I claimed through the state of Missouri (legal resident and full-time student). I had no tax filings in 2019. I listed my parents home address on both of my 2020 electronic filings (was this wrong to do)? I filed 2020 taxes (successfully) through TurboTax. Is there an audit/tax expert I have access to and what is the charge/fee amount for assistance? Thank you.

Out-of-state students are generally considered residents of their home state on temporary absence from their resident state.

Any income earned in Missouri is taxed by both Missouri (because you earned it there) and Illinois (because you remain an Illinois resident unless you filed as an independent taxpayer).

Illinois will give you credit for any tax paid to Missouri.

Since you never filed an Illinois return, you can file an original return and include a credit for tax paid to Missouri. Illinois will want a copy of your MO return as proof of the amount of double-tax income and MO tax liability.
