I am eligible for free federal/state file using Turbotax according to IRS website, but just paid $155 to file federal/state as self-employed. Should I have paid that?

It would have been best if you had asked your question before paying, and it might have been possible to steer you into a free product.   You might have qualified for one of the free products.  We have no way of knowing since no one in this community forum knows anything about your return.  I can tell you about the 2 free products, and you can see if you would have qualified.

The regular Free Edition is for very simple returns and not everyone can use it.  Certain forms are not available in Free Edition and require an upgrade to a higher edition, such as one of Schedules 1-3, itemized deductions, education credits, student loan interest, retirement savers credit, capital gains/losses, self-employed business income/expenses, rental/royalty income, Schedule K-1, etc.   Did you start in Free Edition and had to upgrade?   :

The other free product (TurboTax IRS Free File Program) is fully-featured and can prepare all the usual forms and schedules.  For example, in addition to Schedules 1-3 it can prepare Schedule C, D, E, F, etc., and enter K-1. But one has to meet one of the qualifications to use.  See below:

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns through the IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax, you just need to meet one of these requirements:

      • Your 2019 AGI is $36,000 or less (for Married Filing Jointly returns, combined AGI of both spouses cannot be over that limit),  or
      • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
      • In 2019, you served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum AGI of $69,000, and you have a military-issued W-2.

The answer you may have been emailed had some additional pasted info that I've now removed above.  I removed a FAQ at the bottom of the answer above that told how to switch to the TurboTax IRS Free File Program, which didn't apply in your case, since you've already paid and cannot use that switch method.  That info was for someone who had not yet paid and was pasted with the rest of the info.  Sorry for any confusion.

If you qualified for one of those free products but used the Self-Employed Edition by mistake, you can phone TurboTax Support and discuss your situation and tell them how you would have qualified.   I don't know what they will say/do.  They may say that continuing on to pay indicated your acceptance of the terms.  But it can't hurt to try.

Support hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific (8AM-12 Midnight Eastern), 7 days/week
