My husband is a DJ.  Where should this income be reported?  Is there a certain amount he has to make to report this income?

How to report DJ income?

If your husband is working independently as a DJ and collecting payments for his services directly from his customers, he is self-employed. Your will want to upgrade to TurboTax Self-Employed to be able to report his income and associated expenses on Schedule C, Form 1040.

All income from self-employment should be reported. If, as I suspect will be true for your husband, the income was not reported of Forms 1099-MISC by those who paid him, you will want to enter it into TurboTax Self-Employed using the following steps:

  • Under the Business tab, select Business income and expenses > Business income [Start] or [Update];
  • Scroll down to General income [Start];
  • This will take you to a screen where you may list categories or specific items of income and the associated amounts. Click Continue and complete the interview.
  • Continue on to the Business expenses section and enter all your expenses for supplies, transportation, etc.

If his net earnings from self-employment exceed $400, he will also file Schedule SE, Form 1040 to pay his self-employment (FICA) tax, to obtain credit with the Social Security Administration for his earnings.
