@_Maria_ , then the treatment should be the same --- the Publication 970 referred to by @DaveF1006 is a good source for separating out taxable / reportable income from that not required to be reported. I am assuming here that the fellowship grant comes to you directly and not through the institution that you are affiliated with -- so keep all documents regarding this , just in case IRS wants to see.

I don't quite understand the comment that the grant is paid directly to me. I receive it through a German research institute, which I am affiliated with. They do not provide any tax forms as the grant is tax free, I have only pay checks.
