You cannot import a 1099 consolidated form. The consolidated 1099 form received from your broker may contain several parts, which should be clearly labeled on the form. Examples of some forms are 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, and 1099-B. Each part must be entered or imported in the corresponding section of TurboTax.
You can securely import your 1099 forms into TurboTax if your broker or financial institution is on our list of TurboTax Import Partners. If they're not, you can type it in yourself.
Here's how to import:
To manually enter information from a 1099-INT form, you can follow these steps in TurboTax:
To manually enter information from a 1099-DIV form, you can follow these steps in TurboTax:
To manually enter information from a 1099-B form, you can follow these steps in TurboTax:
Got It Thanks
I have found that you can upload the pdf form that you got from your institution. The confusion to me was last year I converted my vanguard accounts to brokerage type. In previous years I had a FEIN (TIN on vanguard's docs) for every mutual fund. This year I have a 1099-div and a 1099-consolidated. When I do the import it only gets the -div, and I have to "review" them over again. Now with the consolidated you just use the one FEIN/TIN number and upload the PDF or enter the totals by hand. It should be simpler but I wasted a good hour or two until I figured it out.
How did you accomplish the PDF upload? I have Turbotax 2021 desktop (Windows).
Thanks -
TurboTax CD/Download version does not support the .pdf upload option. Instead you can send a copy of your statements to the IRS.
If you are e-filing your tax return, then mail your statements along with Form 8453 to the following address within three days after the IRS accepts your tax return:
Internal Revenue Service
Attn: Shipping and Receiving, 0254
Receipt and Control Branch
Austin, TX 73344-0254
If you need a blank Form 8453, you can download this pdf, enter your address information and check the box for Form 8949 (this form is really just a cover sheet).
Thanks. for directions to import.
A 1099 consolidated pdf works for 1099-DIV but turbo tax does not even give you the option to import from pdf for the 1099-B. Is this in error? Answers seem to vary on this topic.
No, it's not an error. The Form 1099-B is sometimes very complex and not as straight forward as a Form 1099-DIV or Form 1099-INT. There are several options to enter your information for investment sales if you cannot import directly from a TurboTax Partner.
Keep in mind:
Wash sales cannot be combined into section totals. They should be entered individually so that you can track your cost basis and know when you are allowed to use the information on a final sale.
The steps to enter a summary of your sales transactions is provided below.
If you are e-filing your tax return, then mail your statements (1099-Bs or other document showing detailed sales information) along with Form 8453 to:
Internal Revenue Service
Attn: Shipping and Receiving, 0254
Receipt and Control Branch
Austin, TX 73344-0254
If you need a blank Form 8453, you can download this pdf, enter your address information and check the box for Form 8949 (this form is really just a cover sheet)
Note: Any sales summaries that include only box A or box D sales, and which have no adjustments to gain/loss, don't need to be included on a statement mailed to the IRS. If this is all you have, then you do not need to mail anything to the IRS.
Thank you for the reply. If the 1099-B is typically more complex, all the more reason that imoprt via pdf should be made to work so manual errors are avoided. In any case, I'm dealing with a consolidated pdf version, from which DIV info was extracted just fine -- but TT does not attempt to get B info in the same way. If import electronically can work from the bank, then all the relevant fields exist just as in the pdf. The import from pdf works for interest, dividends, and cryptocurrency, but not for stocks or 'other'. The [Bring it over from my bank, upload from my computer, snap a photo] menu doesn't come up for those two categories. Seems like an opportunity for improvement.
Hmmm, my 1099 instructs about 8949 and Schedule D, but no mention of 8453... what's the purpose of a paper form for e-filing? Thanks.
While you cannot upload a 1099-B in pdf file format, one possible option might be to report your sales in summary form rather than listed separately on Form 8949. A summary report on Schedule D is possible provided basis has already been reported to the IRS and you have no adjustments to make.
