Hello - in 2023, i switched jobs within the same employer but different legal entities i.e. I had 2 W2s with the same EIN, and hence had excess social security taxes deducted. I requested the refund by filing form 843 along with documentation from my company's paying agent and sent it to the IRS at tax filing time in April. I have not heard back on the refund status or any communication back from the IRS, and cannot seem to find a way to contact them for the status. Any help you can provide, is there a live agent we can talk to in IRS for this issue and find out when the refund will be issued? Thanks in advance.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
Thank you! the flow you described works but at the end, there is a message that says the line is busy with high volume so they disconnect and an agent doesn't come up. Will try again!
The best time to try is at 7:00 AM your time zone, Monday through Friday.
TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after you file your return and the IRS accepts it for processing, nor can TurboTax find out what the IRS is doing for you. You can contact the IRS yourself.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
