How to file tax for 2020

See https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/2020

You will have to use a TurboTax desktop product (installed) since online filing for the 2020 tax year is closed.

It is now too late to file to get a refund.  But you still have to file and pay any tax due.  If you do have a tax due the interest has been adding up so file as soon as possible.

2020 is now a prior year.

Did you start it last year?  How to finish a return you started online,

Sorry it's too late to start a 2020 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS. And too late to efile.

To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here,

TurboTax 2020 Prior Year Tax Prep - File Past Years' Taxes

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand.  Here are some basic forms.....

Here is the 2020 1040 return

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

@chengy2020 the deadline for claiming a refund for the 2020 tax year was May 17, 2024..... but if you owe, you still owe.

Thanks. I purchase and downloaded the desktop version, filled in all the information.

The app suggested that e-Filing is not available, and I have to file by mail.

Thanks. I don't need the refund. I was just trying to file the 1099K form from PayPal, which is the only tax form I had in 2020.

The TurboTax 2020 desktop said no need to create an entry for 1099k (nor could I upload the form anywhere in that desktop app). So I would like to consult an expert: how to file tax with only a 1099k form.

Why did you get a 1099K?  That is usually for self employment income.  Was that the only income you had?  Which Desktop program did you buy?

You can enter your income as Cash or General income. You don't need to get a 1099MISC, 1099NEC or 1099K. Even if you did you can enter your total income as General Income. Only the total goes to schedule C. You should be entering the income from your own records.

To report your self employment income you will fill out schedule C in your personal 1040 tax return and pay SE self employment Tax. The SE tax is to pay both the Social Security and Medicare tax that wasn't taken out like on a W2 job.

Self Employment tax (Scheduled SE) is automatically generated if a person has $400 or more of net profit from self-employment. You pay 15.3% SE tax on 92.35% of your Net Profit (If it is greater than $400). The 15.3% self employed SE Tax is to pay both the employer part and employee part of Social Security and Medicare (FICA). So you get social security credit for it when you retire. It is in addition to any regular income tax you owe on it.

To fill out schedule C in the Desktop program Deluxe or Premier…..
Go to Federal tab
Click on Wages and Income - Continue
Pick - I'll choose what I work on
Then scroll way down to Business Items
Business Income and Expenses - Click the Start or Update button

Or for the Home & Business Desktop program…..
Go to Business tab-Continue. Then pick I'll choose what I work on
First item, Business Income and Expenses click Start or Update
Profit or Loss from Business, click Start or Update.

You use your own name, address and ssn or business name and EIN if you have one. You should say you use the Cash Accounting Method and all income is at risk.

for that 1099-K, what was the income from?  did you run a business at that time or was it money received from 'friends and family'.  There is a lot of confusion on these forms, esp. back in 2020, so best to explain why you received the money.

and if for a business or work venture, then yes, you'll owe self employment tax and MAYBE income tax.

if this is work related, what expenses were there as that will reduce your income and tax liability.
