How to enter form 8949?

Form 8949 is automatically created behind the scenes when you enter information about investment sales.

Investment sales are generally reported to you on Form 1099-B.  When you enter the details of your sales from your Form 1099-B, then Form 8949 is created and included as part of your tax return.

How to enter form 8949?

Turbotax has not provided me a screen to enter my capital gains. How and where do I enter my capital gains from Openheimer?

How to enter form 8949?

You enter your capital gains, losses, and 1099-B forms all in the same place:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax if it isn't already open.

  2. Search for investment sales and then select the Jump to investment sales link in the search results.

  3. Answer Yes to the question Did you sell stocks, mutual funds, bonds or other investments?

    • If you reach the Here's the investment sales we have so far screen, select Add More Sales.

  4. Follow the instructions and we'll calculate the gain or loss from the sale.

Your total capital gains for the year minus your total capital losses result in a net gain or a net loss.
