How is a stipend counted on my taxes

My education stipend is a loan that I do not have to pay back if I work for that employer after I gradate. A loan is not income. How come this is?

How is a stipend counted on my taxes

The stipend you received is taxable income. ‌Employers usually report it on a Form 1099-MISC and report it as Other Income, not self-employment income or business income.

To report this on your return:

  1. Scroll down to Other Common Income
  2. Select Start or Revisit 1099-MISC and add 1099-MISC
  3.  Enter your 1099-MISC and select Continue
  4. Enter Stipend for the description and Continue
  5. Select None of these apply on the next screen
  6. Select only this tax year for this 1099-MISC and Continue
  7.  Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money
  8. Continue
