How do I upgrade to plus?

How to upgrade to Plus

If you have already filed your 2018 tax return using the Free Edition without PLUS, then you need to upgrade to PLUS and pay first to access your prior year return. Please follow the instructions below:

  1. Login to TurboTax.com

  2. On the Tax Home screen click "show" to see all your tax returns & documents.

  3. Under 2018 click on "Add a State." (We are not actually adding a state, but need to get back to the page to upgrade to PLUS.)

  4. Click "upgrade" on from the left menu. (If it is greyed out, you already upgraded and can close out of there.)

  5. Now, click on "Tax Tools" from the left menu.

  6. Click "Print Center."

  7. Select "Print This year's Return." (Not Prior year's return or you will get knocked out of the return.)

  8. Click "Pay Now" to pay for PLUS to access the prior year's return.

If you have not already filed your 2018 tax return, please click on the link below for more instructions.

I suspect you may have an additional problem.  You appear to currently be in Live Basic, at least that is what is listed under your question above.    Did you use Live Basic to prepare your 2018 return because you wanted the extra feature of live help from a CPA/EA tax expert?  Or did you upgrade too far accidentally while trying to resolve this prior-return access issue?   Live Basic is 79.99 for a Federal refund and 34.99 for a state return, while the minimum to unlock a prior return is PLUS for 19.99.

If you try to pay now, since you are in Live Basic, it will charge you at least 79.99.     If you have already filed the 2018 return, you won't be able to downgrade it yourself, so we can tell you how to speak to TurboTax Support to ask them to unlock the prior returns.

If you have not yet filed the 2018 return, we can tell you how you may be able to downgrade to Free Edition then upgrade to PLUS.

There's also a free option if a return transcript will suit your purpose.   You may be able to immediately download one at the IRS website if you qualify to open an IRS account there.  Otherwise, to order a transcript to come by postal mail takes 5-10 calendar days.
