Unfortunately, due to the extra security most states and the IRS have about e-filing and mailing returns, you cannot mail your federal return and then e-file your state within Turbo Tax. https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3301358
So what is one supposed to do if TurboTax cannot e-file federal tax return, but the state (NY) requires e-filing?
There has to be at least an explanation that it's OK to paper file NY state return in this case.
TurboTax is unable to e-file my late father's final tax return this year because he is due a refund. It tells me so, and tells me I need to fill out 1310, but doesn't provide it. Not that it matters since my father had a Will, so I need to send my estate administration certificate. The program tells me so. Turbo Tax tells me to paper file. OK, fine.
Yet, when I print out tax returns - both federal and state, the state instructions while having an address still have a message how you are required to e-file and can still do it. HELLO? I CANNOT DO IT because I cannot e-file federal. One would think that TurboTax would be smart enough to know that it didn't allow me to e-file state returns and at least not put this confusing message about e-filing state return.
To mail a return to NY:

Thank you. Even though TurboTax also printed the address on the instructions, I was a bit confused because it also printed a message that they "require" me to e-file, so I wasn't sure I am allowed to mail it.
