How do I get the excess paid refunded? I'd filed an extension

I'd paid what I owed as HoH when I filed for an extension. But I had to change my status to Single when I filed my return, and the entire amount owed as Single got withdrawn. So barring any penalties and interest due, the amount I paid with my extension was "extra". which I'm hoping to get back and was wondering if I have to do anything or just wait

At this point you just wait.

What you were supposed to do was enter the amount you paid with the extension as a payment in the tax return that you filed. But since you apparently didn't do that, the IRS should eventually notice the overpayment and send you a refund without your having to do anything. It will probably take several months.
