How do I force TurboTax to include federal form 4684 with my state return? (My state return was rejected for missing federal form 4684.)

Fill out the casualty and theft section of TurboTax. It is in the federal section for deductions and credits. Scroll down to Other Deductions and Credits.

See About Form 4684, Casualties and Thefts for more help.

How do I force TurboTax to include federal form 4684 with my state return? (My state return was rejected for missing federal form 4684.)

Hi,

I did fill that out. However, Turbo Tax is not submitting that form with my state taxes. So California is rejecting my return saying that a copy of that federal form is required.

Thanks,

-Paul

Double-check that there are no missing data fields in the federal Casualty and Theft section.

I noticed in a quick trial with my software that when I left out the date (inadvertently), the form didn't populate but the number for the loss generated quickly, and no error appeared. It appears if any item is blank (even one not necessary to properly calculate your loss), the form does not generate.

When I reviewed the worksheet that creates the form, I could see the error (something you cannot see in the online program).

If all of the data is present, this should force the form over.  Let us know after a second review if the error persists for you.

You can look for the form before e-filing by selecting the option to view your forms just before filing or by visiting the Print Center in the Tools menu (on the left of the screen.)

How do I force TurboTax to include federal form 4684 with my state return? (My state return was rejected for missing federal form 4684.)

This is a problem because the information was from a stock that I owned that claimed losses. When I looked at my Federal forms the 4684 form is not there but the amounts shown that are derived from form 4684 are very small (-1). Is there a way I can skip it completely? I need to get this thing filed.

Since I'm unable to get this resolved. I suppose that Intuit doesn't have the tight people to fix it's software and doesn't intend to in the first place. I'm very disappointed and will leave an unfavorable review of the product. Making an appointment with H & R Block today to take care of this....

I have the same problem with my California return being rejected.

It appears (from the printout) that page 2 of Form 4684 was included with the California return, but not page 1.

I do not know if that is causing the problem, or if it is something else.

This seems like a problem for which Intuit should provide support or a fix. How does one get in touch with them?

Conclusion after talking to TurboTax support:

They claim (without providing any evidence) that the problem is NOT that page 1 of Form 4684 was missing from my Federal and California returns. Rather the problem is that page 2 of Form 4684, which was included in both Federal and California returns in Forms Mode and when printing, cannot be included as part of efiled California returns. The only remedy is to file California by mail. They offered to refund my $25 fee for California efiling.

However this leaves me dissatisfied on several accounts:

1. Why can't Form 4684 be efiled for California returns? having to print and mail is a great inconvenience and delays my refund.

2. Why doesn't TurboTax make this clear to me BEFORE I attempt to efile? It might have been possible to avoid the problem if I hadn't already efiled my federal return and didn't want to amend it.

Lots of frustration with this same error finally solved. I tried 4 times with the same problem and failed 4 times. Then I finally completed a 4684 input for both a passive and personal expense, then the form finally appeared with all pages in both the CA return. I had an annoying $22 passive amount showing up on one of my K-1's. Then I realized I had a small storm damage related to personal items that I knew had no tax impact. I filled out the 4684 form for that irrelevant personal loss. It didn't affect any of my taxes due; however, it did force the 4684 to appear on both returns. CA accepted the return within 30 min.
