Go to your Sch C expenses and review your expense line items that you created and named. Make sure there are no spaces or symbols of any sort, only text. This should make the error go away.

Nothing worked because I was locked out of the form -- I couldn't make any changes/deletions etc. with my keyboard. There was a blank line as the first entry but I couldn't delete it. I ended up trashing the entire Schedule C and recreating it.
