How do I find and continue my 2018 taxes that I filed an extension for?

I assume you are asking about Online TurboTax.   Normally you would just log in and at the Tax Home continue your return by clicking on "Take me to my return."

If you log in and can't find evidence of the 2018 return you started, and it's acting like it wants you to start one, then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.   Many people end up with multiple accounts without realizing it.   Here's how to troubleshoot for multiple accounts (User IDs) :

You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.

To get a list of your User IDs and recover account access, you can use the tool at the link below.  Try using your phone number first.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access.

NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session.

If still no luck after running that on your phone number and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:

Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, and choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by SSN and other parameters.

Thanks for the reply but no, I am using the disc on my computer.  I thought it should be like any ohter year where I could open it up and continue where I left off right?  I only have the option of starting a new return.  I have the emails confirming my extension so I know I did them.  I just can't find them on my computer.

I don't know if you are using a MAC or PC.    If you are using the Windows version, launch your desktop TurboTax program that you installed from the CD.   If there is no rectangular shortcut icon showing at the main screen, then click on the FILE menu in the upper left corner of the TurboTax GUI.   In the dropdown menu choose "Open Tax Return", and an explorer directory will pop up.  Does it show your *.tax2018 data file?

If you are using Windows, the default location is the Documents folder, but you could have saved it anywhere.

If you are using the desktop version, then all *.tax2018 data files are saved on your system.   Search your entire computer system for any file ending in the *.tax2018 file extension.

UGH! Thanks again.  Getting closer.  I searched using *.tax2018 and found the file (2018 1040) that shows last modified 4/12/19.  That's the file and that's the date I filed the extension!  Unfortunately when I open it, it only gives me the option to open 2017 returns in the 2018 TT program!

Nevermind!  I had to close the TT program first, then click the link which opened my 2018 return in TT.  I don't get why it got lost like that.  Thank you for your help.  Mahalo and Aloha!

You're welcome.  I'm glad you found it.  Good luck.
