The "01" part of the rejection message means the FIRST dependent shown on your Form 1040 is the one with duplicate use of their SSN.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
Do you have a teenage who filed their own return and did not say on their return that they can be claimed? Or is there another parent who might have claimed that dependent?
Since their SSN is already in the system, you cannot e-file with their SSN on your return this year. You can mail your return if you are the one who can claim that dependent, and the IRS will process the mailed return and sort out the duplicate use of the SSN later.
Thx for answering @xmasbaby0
I verified no one in family has already filed a return, which means it was fraudulent since the data entry is all verified correct. Let me ask a follow up, you are saying that the "01" in the error code "IND-517-01" is indicating that the culprit is the first dependent listed in my return? I don't have any other place to reference. Here is the message from turbo tax on where to find the problem social security number:
"If you are claiming more than one dependent, review and look for a number in brackets to indicate which dependent is causing the issue. For example: “[2]” will refer to the second dependent from the top."
The problem is there is no location available or message to reference where I can find a number in brackets indicating the duplicate dependent. Again I'm using the PC desktop software.
Your dependents are shown on your Form 1040. Which one's name is first on the list--top to bottom?
And.. no matter which one it is.....in order for you to claim the dependent you are going to have to file by mail.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
