FAFSA rules are different from the IRS rules.
You are a dependent of another person if that person is claiming you on their tax return. Dependents can be qualifying children or qualifying relatives.
The Overview of the rules for claiming a dependent are in IRS publication 501 on page 11.
If no one is claiming you on their tax return, you are not a dependent.
If someone can claim you, you can't claim an exemption for yourself on a federal tax return.
Refer to IRS Pub 501. read it carefully.
If FAFSA rules are different, you'll have to review those also.

Basically, how old are you? Are you a full time student? How much did you make?
