FAFSA rules are different from the IRS rules.

 

You are a dependent of another person if that person is claiming you on their tax return.  Dependents can be qualifying children or qualifying relatives

 

The Overview of the rules for claiming a dependent are in IRS publication 501 on page 11.

 

If no one is claiming you on their tax return, you are not a dependent.
