How can I owe less in 2026

Since you are Single and no longer have dependents, I recommend that you focus on lowering your taxable income by focusing on the following:

  • Retirement Contributions: Contributions to a Traditional IRA or 401(k) are typically tax-deductible. This is one of the most effective ways to lower your taxable income.
    • The maximum 401(k) contribution for 2026 is $24,500.  If you are age 50-59, you can contribute an additional $8,000, or if you are age 60-63, you can contribute an additional $11,250.
    • If your income is under the limit (and depending on if you are covered by a retirement plan at work), you may be able to make a deductible Traditional IRA contribution up to $7,500, or $8,600 if you are Age 50 or above.

  • Health Savings Account (HSA): If you have a high-deductible health plan, HSA contributions are 100% tax-deductible, and the funds can be used for medical expenses tax-free.  The maximum contribution for 2026 (self-only) is $4,400, or $5,400 if you are age 55 or over.

In order to avoid a balance due when you file your return, you can also adjust your Form W-4 with your employer to have more taxes withheld, or make estimated tax payments.
