When you use Online TurboTax, you get one return per fee. Each return needs its own account and user ID. If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, you overwrite the first one and lose it forever.
You are confusing the two types of TurboTax software that you can use to prepare your taxes.
If you use TurboTax Online, you aren't downloading anything to your computer, you are doing your return online, it's saved online, and you pay for each return, unless it qualifies as a free return.
If you purchase TurboTax Desktop, you download TurboTax software to your computer.
You open the software on your computer, rather than signing in online. You save your returns to your computer, and you can e-file up to five federal returns at no extra charge.
The instructions you are referring to are for the Desktop software. If you are using TurboTax Online, they don't apply.
