Home use and investment expenses for employer

Firstly, I work  for an employer in a position that teaches a specific indoor physical activity. This is not my own business.

If I were to invest in structurally changing a room in my home and in equipment to further my knowledge to continue to teach would I be able to write off the expenses? Or would the only way I could do so is to teach for the employer at my residence and be able to supply proof?

No, unfortunately since you are an employee job-related expenses are no longer deductible under the new tax laws. See this article for more info.
