Do we have to commit to a filing status when we file an extension?

I think we might save money by filing married but separate, however I need more time to decide.  If I file for an extension how should I file, joint or separate?

Hi patrickcampbell2,

Yes, when filing an extension, you'll need to input whether you are married filing jointly or filing separately.  If jointly, the extension will apply to you and your spouse.  If separately, the extension will apply to you.
