Health insurance premiums included in MA w-2 box 16 income

My health insurance premiums are not included in my w-2 box 1 income, but they are included in the box 16 amount for state of MA income. How do I ensure that the premiums are deducted from my MA income in TT online? They are listed in box 14 as S125, however I don’t see S125 as an option when entering the w-2.

It's very important to check the details of your plan to see if you qualify to deduct it for Massachusetts (MA).

If the health insurance premiums qualify to be deducted you will provide the necessary information while completing the Massachusetts (MA) return. (see the image below)

If you do not have Form 1099-HC you can enter your information as a private insurance once you determine you qualify.

If you work for an employer who is not a MA employer, they may be following the rules for the state where the company is located.

For most plans, the 2022 “Minimum Creditable Coverage” standards include

• Coverage for a comprehensive set of services (for example: doctor visits, hospital admissions, day surgery, emergency services, mental health and substance abuse, and prescription drug coverage); • Doctor visits for preventive care, without a deductible;

• A cap on annual deductibles of $2,750 for an individual and $5,500 for a family;

• For plans with up-front deductibles or co-insurance on core services, an annual maximum on out-of-pocket spending of no more than $8,700 for an individual and $17,400 for a family;

• No caps on total benefits for a particular illness or for a single year;

• No policy that covers only a fixed dollar amount per day or stay in the hospital, with the patient responsible for all other charges;

• For policies that have a separate prescription drug deductible, it cannot exceed $340 for an individual or $680 for a family;

• All services must be provided to all of those covered (for example, a plan that covers dependents must extend maternity services to them); and

• No cap on prescription drug benefits.

In general, non-taxable fringe benefits must be:

  • Non-discriminatory
  • Made available to everyone, not just highly compensated employees
