HDHP / HSA

I can't complete my turbotax return (married filing jointly) because I retired in 2022, no longer have an high deductible health plan and turbo tax keeps asking me to complete a form 8889 as follows:

Form 8889-T coverage check box needs to be checked to indicate the type of coverage held under a high-deductible plan during 2023

With entry choices of:

Line 1, Self

Line 1, Family

I do have a HSA that was built years prior when I did have a HDHP, but that should have no bearing on my 2023 taxes.  Can I just remove the form?  Did I make a mistake in completing my taxes, or is Turbo Tax at fault here?

HDHP / HSA

In the HSA interview, you presumably indicated that you either had no HDHP coverage or had conflicting coverage (like Medicare) all 12 months of the year. TurboTax will based it calculations on this.

Because of this, it's OK to indicate Self coverage on Line 1 in the Review, because that will get you past the test in the Review that assumes that if you have an HSA, then you must have HDHP coverage.

Now that you know that your answer about Line 1 in the Review doesn't matter, you can get past this point in the Review and continue with your return.
