Grandparent claimed my dependent without my permission

So im currently in between jobs, left last one in January of 2021.. my son and I are living with my father & have been for the 2020 tax year. He is trying to claim my son without my permission on his taxes to get the tax credit & not have to pay in.. My father makes too much to get a stimulus check so if he claimed my son, would he also be forfeiting my sons stimulus money? Im afraid this will mess with any government assistance we may get.. does it? I didn't make hardly any money from 2020 so I was getting some money back from claiming my son.. Also what happens if I claim my son as well?

Grandparent claimed my dependent without my permission

Claiming a dependent is not optional. Review the rules at this link for Who can I claim as my dependent?, to make your determination.

That being said, if your father claims your son as a dependent you will not get the stimulus.  Only the person who claims a dependent is eligible even if the income is too high and they don't actually get any.

One of you will definitely be reviewed and only one of you is allowed to claim your son.  Review the information to see who is the person that is actually eligible to claim your son.  Only that person will be allowed.

As far as government assistance, you will need to check with your local government agency to find the answer about that.
