I am a resident of Texas and work in Texas, my company mentioned my working state as Georgia in the payroll system. I worked in the Company from June 2022 - Jan 2024. I noticed it only when I received a notice from the IRS related to tax filing. I contacted the payroll team and they said it was a clerical error and was done by mistake. Can I claim a refund, If yes please suggest what are the next action items.

Look at your W-2's for 2022 and 2023. Do boxes 15, 16 and 17 show that GA tax was withheld?
If GA state tax was withheld from your paychecks then you need to prepare and file NON-resident tax returns for GA to get a refund of any GA tax that was withheld. The amounts withheld would have been in box 17 of your W-2's.
Did this happen for tax years 2022 and for 2023? If you used TurboTax to prepare your 2022 return you can use the CD/download for 2022 to prepare the non-resident GA return. And you will also need to prepare a 2023 GA non-resident return.
