Form 8949

My 2025 year-end summary statement from Charles Schwab indicates that some of my sales should be entered on Part I with Box C checked or Part II with Box F checked. Turbo Tax step-by-step is not offering these options. When I go to forms, I can see these options on the 8949 but the form is locked at won't let me mark them. What should I do?

The reason those sections are locked is that, when using the step-by-step interview, your answers will determine how the sections are handled.

Because Boxes C and F mean that a transaction was not reported to the IRS on a Form 1099-B, the section assumes there are no items to report.

To get Box C or Box F to trigger, you have to tell TurboTax that you did not receive a Form 1099-B for these specific items by creating a new entry for them:

  1. Navigate to Wages & Income, Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other
  2. Rather than editing your imported Schwab 1099-B, click Add investments.
  3. When asked how you want to add your info, do not select Schwab or upload a file, select "Type it in myself"
  4. When TurboTax asks, "Did you get a 1099-B for this sale?", select No
  5. Select "Stocks" (or whatever Schwab indicated)
  6. Enter the sale info and ensure the holding period is one year or less Short-Term (Box C)
  7. Enter the sale info and ensure the holding period is more than one year Long-Term (Box F)

Form 8949

Hi ReneV4,

Thank you for trying to help me.  Unfortunately, I'm not seeing the options you mentioned in steps 1-5. Under Income, here's what I'm seeing:

  1. Interest and Dividends / Forms 1099-INT, 1099-DIV
  2. Investment Income / Form 1099-B, capital gains/loss, home sales
  3. Rentals and Royalties / Rental property, copyright/patent royalties
  4. Business Investment and Estate-Trust Income / Income or loss from ownership in other business and/or trust and estate entities (K-1s received)
  5. Other income or loss / List your own categories for any income not yet entered above

#2 doesn't have an option within it for something other than Form 1099-B.

#4 is looking for K-1s, which I haven't received for the estate.

#5 has no options that allow for reporting investment sales and cost bases.

Other advice?

Thanks,

Craig
