Form 8949

I received form 1099 B from Computershare with no entry except for the proceeds of sale of 4 shares of stock to cover tax on company issued stock. The instructions from Computershare have some details to enter on form 8949. When I was finally able to pull up Form 8949, I cannot enter the information, Turbo tax will not allow me to enter any information.

Form 8949 is automatically generated from information that is entered in the Investment Income section of your return.

You will need to enter the details of the sale of the stock shares in the Investment Income section.  Use the following steps to get started:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-B” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here, including the dash) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-B
