foreign broker dose not provide1099-DIV form

I’m in the U.S. as a research scholar with a J-1 visa (from Germany). I have multiple accounts with German brokers.
Now, I have the problem that they don’t provide a 1099-DIV form.

  1. How do I report the income under “Income” without that form?
  2. I already paid taxes in Germany. How can I ensure that I don’t get taxed a second time here in the U.S.?

I would appreciate any help!

I'll ask some questions that may assist someone in helping you.  I'm not a tax expert, but once you respond, we can ask someone familiar with international tax filing to further comment.

You need to first determine if you can even use TurboTax, which is only for US citizens and "resident aliens for tax purposes."

You have to first determine how you are classified.

  • Are you a non-US citizen from Germany--solely a German citizen?
  • You said you are on J-1 visa.
  • What dates were you in the US?
  • Are you married?

Filers classified as "non-resident aliens for tax purposes" need to prepare a Form 1040NR, which TurboTax cannot do.  If it turns out you can't use TurboTax, we can tell you about an affiliate partner (Sprintax) that can prepare a Form 1040NR for international filers.

I'll see if one of the tax experts currently in the forum can review this thread and tell you how to enter your foreign dividends without a 1099-DIV, and also provide instructions for using the Foreign Tax Credit to avoid double taxation.

You will enter the dividends in the same area as 1099-DIV.  Enter the amount in "ordinary dividends" box.  You can provide a name of the company that paid the dividends, such as your brokerage firm name, and leave other items (especially the box for the tax identification number) blank.

After you have entered the dividend income, visit the Foreign tax credit section  under Deductions and Credits.

Here you will enter the amount of the income again (this is just to match it with the tax paid, it will not be counted in income from this section) and the foreign tax paid.  Enter it as category "passive income".

This will calculate a credit for the taxes paid to Germany to apply them toward the taxes on the same income.
