Filing for deceased brother no W-2 received

First, let me say that we are sorry for your loss.

You may want to review this IRS interactive tool to see if you even need to file - https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/how-do-i-file-a-deceased-persons-tax-return

You will also want to review the information here - https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/deceased-taxpayers-filing-the-final-re...

As for what you can do (extension or wait for W-2), you can do both: file for the extension and wait for the W-2. You can file at any time you are ready, even if you did file form 4868 for an extension.

If the W-2 doesn't show up in a timely manner, you can ask the IRS what they have.

If you have your brother's power of attorney, or are the responsible party and have all his paperwork, then go to the IRS website and get his transcript - you want the Record of Account transcript as it is most complete - se https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
