You probably failed to tell TurboTax what you are doing.

 

You will sign with "<your name > as personal rep"

You can sign your name as "personal representative" if you are the executor, administrator, or otherwise in charge of the deceased person's property.

check the box : filing for someone deceased.

You will get the proper annotations on Form 1040.

 

You can try to e-File.

Often it fails, especially with TurboTax.

 

Others have reported success using other tax prep software after failing with TurboTax.

Correct - you must sign with pen and ink on a paper return.

 

Suggest that you read IRS Pub 559 (Survivors, Executors, and Administrators) for a lot of good information about filing the final return and estate return and other requirements.

You can typically e-file the federal return provided you are not claiming a refund (and need to include Form 1310).
