i completed my return on time but when i went to e-file. i got a message the next day that it was rejected by the irs do to an incorrect agi. as a result my pa state return was rejected. my 2021 agi is correct on the form. in fact it was transferred by ttax when i started the return. i have been trying to find this site for a week to try to get an answer. what happens now? i didn't cause the error and now it looks like i will owe a 5% penalty.

If you filed late last year or paper filed there is a good chance that the 2020 AGI never was entered into the e-file database. Try using 0 (zero) for the AGI.

See this TurboTax FAQ on how to find your AGI

    https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/00/25947?search-action-id=235856632119&search-result-uid=25947

You can get free 2020 tax transcript from the IRS

    https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

If you filed an amended return use the AGI on the first filed tax return.

If it continues to reject then the AGI in the IRS database might be in error. Mail filing is the only option.

my 2021 agi is correct on the form.

You are supposed to use the 2020 AGI when filing the 2021 return.

i tried the $0 approach. i figure if it isn't accepted it can't do any harm. all of the other stuff is totally accurate. i will contact the irs tomorrow. thanks to all of you for your responses. i hate this stuff!!!
