The PIN can be any five digit number such as a zip code or other number that works for you. The date of birth of the taxpayer should be all that's needed.  A return can be filed electronically for a deceased taxpayer.

If you are using TurboTax Online you can try using the steps below to remove any pieces of unseen debris.

In this situation, first please try clearing the cookies and cache.   It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis with online activity.

    • Close your TurboTax return first.

Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example.  Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give  you options.

Once this is complete open your return and try again.

You have the option to file by mail - Use the steps in this FAQ. How do I file my return by mail?

We are sorry for your loss.

Clearing the cache and reopening turbo tax did not help. I have two more tax returns to file and I need a solution other than filing by mail. Please help!

Did the decedent have an IP PIN?  Please see this link for more details.  The link also includes a step to contact the IRS if needed.
