My parents received a 1095-A form with my name on it. I file as an independent. I was only on this insurance for 4 months. My parents paid for it while I was on it.
How do I file this form on my taxes?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you are claimed as a dependent on your parents return, you do not need to enter the 1095-A on your return. They are the only ones that will need to include it on their return.
I file independently
You will have to get the 1095-A information and enter it in TurboTax. You will have to allocate the 1095-A.
You will see "Let us know if these situations apply to you"- select I shared this policy with another who's not on my taxes.
The next page allows you to allocate the amounts. If you shared a Marketplace plan with two or more people who are on separate tax returns, you'll have to find what the SLCSP is for each person's household and add it up. Then, divide your SLCSP by the total SLCSP to get your percentage of premiums and advanced payment of the premium tax credit. The SLCSP percentage is usually left blank.
when I do this then it brings my federal refund up but I didn't pay for it so I shouldn't be getting that much back
When you enter the 1095-A, it will ask if you shared the policy. Select yes.
Then it will ask you to allocate an amount to you. Here, you can allocate 0% to yourself and then your parents can allocate 100% to them. This will take away any credit you are getting.
