I filed an extension and it was rejected for the reason below. I believe the pending tax payment (via bank withdrawal) should be canceled.
Issue: However when I open TurboTax the federal taxes due is still $0. This is the case both if I go to my pending federal return AND if I attempt to re-request an extension. How do I fix this?
Rejection reason: Taxpayer TIN in the Return Header must not be the same as a TIN of a previously accepted electronic return for the return type and tax period indicated in the tax return.

If you already e-Filed, that message says you're not going to be able to request an extension of time to file.
Get Form 4868 from the IRS website or file 4868 online at the IRS website (Make a Payment)
I haven't e-Filed (or mail filed) for 2021 tax year though.
You can get Form 4868 from the IRS at www.irs.gov now.
You don’t need to file Form 4868 if you make a payment using the IRS
electronic payment options. Your extension will be automatically
processed when you pay part or all of your estimated income tax
electronically. You can pay online or by phone.

You can pay all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or using a credit or debit card. Your extension is then automatically granted and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.
Same exact issue. My question is, how do I know whether TurboTax will still send the payment or not? If they do send the payment and I send it again, I’ll pay twice and have to wait for a refund. If they don’t transmit payment because of the rejection, and I dont pay it again, I’ll get a failure to pay penalty.
Have you got the extension filed yet? @GPully
This is my exact problem. I had my extension request rejected and now I would pay it through the IRS web site to avoid penalty. There is no way to tell if TurboTax will forward the payment with the rejection. It shows as paid but that makes no sense to me. If the IRS couldn't verify my request, they could hardly process the payment. At least I hope so. Otherwise there will not be enough money in that account.
I went ahead and filed the extension anyway without making another payment. We’ll see if it gets rejected.
HOWEVER, that is NOT the issue - I could always file the extension using a form. The problem is whether TurboTax is going to transmit payment to the IRS even if the extension was rejected. Could you please verify for me? Looks like im not the only one dealing with this. Thank you.
I am facing the same issue. After the rejection TurboTax is not updating the amount that I owe to IRS.
Literally same issue. I filed for an extension just in case I couldn't finish my taxes in time but I ended up submitting in time. Unfortunately, I realized after submitting the federal returns that the extension had been rejected and the amount that I put down as payment on the extension form had been marked as credit in my actual federal returns. I also can't start on an amendment (1040-X) even though my federal return has already been approved? I'm guessing I have to wait for the state return to be approved too which seems broken.
Ok, I think there's actually a solution. On the IRS website, you can select the option for making a payment for a file extension. Whatever payment is input there automatically gets filed as credit from an extension. Which should then match up with the 1040 form that TurboTax generated and filed.
I found out how to fix the TurboTax default. Since the original request was rejected, it could not be processed. But TT assumes that it was. So if you go in and change the amount owed and paid back to what they should be then you can refile the extension request. I did that and it was then accepted. I had to change my AGI because the value TT used was wrong. I believe this will generate one request for payment.
Is TT just going to give a direct answer? Will payment be processed even though the extension is rejected?
If the extension does not go through, the extension does not process. @bob12312131
"If the extension does not go through, the extension does not process"
...Obviously. The question is if the extension doesn't got through does the *payment* not process. Can you please answer that?
