Exemptions are available based
on a number of circumstances, including certain hardships, some life events,
health coverage or financial status, and membership in some groups.
For more information on exemptions, please see this Healthcare.gov topic.
To determine if you qualify for any health insurance exemptions, please see this Healthcare.gov Exemption Tool.
For a taxpayer to qualify for an affordability exemption, the lowest-priced 2016 coverage that was available to you (through either a or Marketplace or job-based plan), would've had to cost more than 8.13% of your household income.
You may visit this link to use the Marketplace tool and determine what the lowest bronze-level plan would've been for you: https://www.healthcare.gov/tax-tool/#/year
To determine what the lowest priced plan was through your employer, you will need to contact your employer's HR department.
For the household's income, the IRS considers the household Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI).
