Please clarify your question by adding some additional information so we can provide a more helpful answer. Are you entering a Form 1099-R? If not, what form are you entering? Is your retirement income exempt from state taxes? What do you mean by "causes trouble", what is the program doing?

A 1099-R form?
If So
You can't enter "exempt" in either box 14 ,15 or 16.......that is a notice to you that the $$ could be exempt from state taxes in your own state.....if you still live in the state where the pension was earned.
Getting it to be exempt from your state taxes is dealt with in the pages that follow the main 1099-R form (or, for PA residents, when you start the PA state Q&A session);
The format of the questions presented depends on what state you are filing.
