Can’t figure out why we are getting this error? Only dependent wouldn’t be on anyone’s taxes but ours. Taxpayers are over 40 years old and certainly wouldn’t be dependents on anyone’s taxes. Any ideas?

If someone else has used your dependent's SSN--even if by accident-- then you cannot e-file.  You will have to print, sign and mail your tax return.  The IRS will sort it out.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

(One thing---if your dependent is a teenager or student with a first job who filed a return--kids often mess up parents' returns by filing and saying they cannot be claimed as someone else's dependent.  Is that a possibility for you?)
