Question

Enter Foreign TIN/EIN

Hi,

I received a 1099-NEC from a Canada-based company with 89 as the prefix in the TIN. When I check the return for errors, I get the following: "Payers EIN is invalid for electronic filing".  Is there a way to work around this?

Thank you!

To clarify, what was the payment for? Was it for work performed for the Canadian company?

Hi. Yes, it was independent contractor work (writing) performed in the US for a Canadian-based company. I confirmed the TIN with the company's auditor who said that Canadian companies are required to issue tax forms to US residents, however it appears the TIN is not recognized in the US. Thank you!

Yes, you will need to enter this information as self-employed income but you won't enter this as a 1099 NEC..

  1. Type Schedule C in the Search box.
  2. Select the Jump to link.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses?  answer yes
  4. When you report your income, enter it as General income rather than 1099 NEC income. In the description area, mention this is 1099 NEC income from a foreign source.
