Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

Hi. I installed a new heat pump in 2025 and should be able to receive a tax credit. However, when I call the company, all I am being given is a AHRI reference number ([removed]), but Turbotax is requiring a QMID number, which they are telling me they do not have. What should I do?

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

Then you can't claim the credit.  The credit was modified by the Inflation Reduction Act to require manufacturers to become "qualified" (by joining an IRS program and following IRS rules), and then issue a QMID number for each item.  This was probably done to reduce people claiming upgrades that didn't really meet the minimum efficiency standards.  The law was passed in 2022 and the IRS gave a grace period until December 31, 2024 to sign up.  There is a list here, I can't vouch for it being complete.

But the bottom line is that if a manufacturer did not sign up to become "qualified", then you can't claim the credit starting January 1, 2025.
