It is how Montana calculates tax.  Montana is not taxing all of your income in Montana.  What Montana does is pretend that all of your income is taxable in MT, calculates the tax on that amount, and then prorate the amount of tax according to the amount of income you actually earned in Montana.  In the tax return review, it appears like all of your income is taxed in Montana, but when you finish the return, you will see that it is not.  Only the percentage of your income earned in Montana will actually be taxed.

Was 636 your total income for the year?

My income overall was 7,000+ . But it then says, My montana Adjusted income is 5,106, Less: Standard deduction 2,030, Personal exemption : 2,440 and Monatana Taxable Income 636. None of these number make sense or apply to anything. All my other Federal taxes are from working in Texas. I have redone it all two times more now and it still gets all these random numbers from somwhere. 155 out of my 7,000 is from montana, with no odd tips, deductions or anything.
