E-filing Military W-2c: Corrected Box 1, 2 , and 12a Amounts with Additional Box 12 Code, How to File Properly

*Questions are specific to e-filing with TurboTax*

I received a W-2c form for non-taxable combat pay, and have yet to file my taxes.

On my W-2, Box 12 populates with Code "AA" showing  my designated Roth contributions under a section 401(k) plan (this is standard for me).

On my W-2c, Boxes 1, 2, and 12a populated with corrected amount information, and Box 12 only populated with Code "Q" for my non-taxable Combat Pay. I am aware that it is common for only corrected fields of information to show on a W-2c.

My questions are:

1) Do I simply upload my W-2 form and then input the corrected amounts (Box 1, 2, and 12a) from my W-2c? If so, do I keep the Box 12 Code "AA" and simply add an additional Box 12 with Code "Q" on this?

2) Do I need to upload my W-2 (including all of its original information) AND upload my W-2c separately with the corrected information (leaving uncorrected fields blank)? I do not see another option for uploading the W-2c merely for situational awareness.

3) Given that my W-2c only populated individually corrected fields, is there any real difference between uploading and inputting the corrected information on my W-2 vs. uploading my W-2c and inputting the correct W-2 information?

I just want to make sure I am understanding everything properly, and filing correctly.

E-filing Military W-2c: Corrected Box 1, 2 , and 12a Amounts with Additional Box 12 Code, How to File Properly

The bottom line is that you want all the information from your W-2 and corrected W-2c posted on the tax return you file.

1) Do I simply upload my W-2 form and then input the corrected amounts (Box 1, 2, and 12a) from my W-2c? If so, do I keep the Box 12 Code "AA" and simply add an additional Box 12 with Code "Q" on this?

  • This is an alternative.  If you already have the W-2 posted, simply make the corrections.
  • Keep the Code AA: Designated Roth contributions under a section 401(k) plan.
  • Yes, add Q: Nontaxable combat pay.  "Thank You"

2) Do I need to upload my W-2 (including all of its original information) AND upload my W-2c separately with the corrected information (leaving uncorrected fields blank)? I do not see another option for uploading the W-2c merely for situational awareness.

  • No, I don't recommend trying to upload both of the W-2's.

3) Given that my W-2c only populated individually corrected fields, is there any real difference between uploading and inputting the corrected information on my W-2 vs. uploading my W-2c and inputting the correct W-2 information?

  • You're correct; therefore, I do recommend alternative 1.
