E-file rejected by IRS for not having Form 8962

My tax return got rejected because I didnt file form 8962. I have Medi-Cal as my insurance and only received 1095-B form. However my parents purchased their health insurance on the marketplace and received 1095-A form.

The IRS system still thinks you have marketplace Insurance.  One of these two workarounds will work.

To Delete a form:

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.

    1. My Info

    2. Federal

    3. State

    4. Review

    5. File

  2. Select Tax Tools

  3. On the drop-down select Tools

  4. On the Pop-Up menu select Delete a Form

  5. This will give you all of the forms in your return

  6. Scroll down to the form you want to delete

  7. Select the Form

  8. Click on Delete.

Then go back and be sure that it is gone

Always use extreme caution when deleting from your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

The workaround is to enter $1 for the 1095-A.  This will not affect anything on your return but having the form there may get the IRS to accept your return.

To do this take the following steps:

  1. Click Deductions and Credits

  2. Scroll down to Medical and Click Show More

  3. Click Start or Revisit next to the ACA

  4. As you walk through the questions, you will be asked if you received a 1095-A.

  5. If you did NOT, click YES anyway.

  6. Enter 0's for the Marketplace identifier and Policy number.

  7. Enter $1 for January monthly premium amount and SLCSP

  8. Walkthrough to the end and submit your return.

Does the second way violate any law?

No it does not because $1 will not affect the refund or liability and the IRS will disregard it anyway.
