Question

e-file amended 2022 return - tt doesn't allow?

I had to amend my 2022 calendar year taxes with a 1099R.  I initiated an amended return through TT desktop ed, and completed it - says "If you'd like to file electronically click on the 'file' tab above to proceed".

I do that but then it says "E-filing is closed for the Season".  TT doesn't seem to be understanding that I have an amended return (despite creating one in TT and having the original there too).  Would be so much cleaner to deal with this electronically - has anyone gotten it to work?  Thanks!

E-filing is closed and you have to print and mail now.  Sorry that the desktop program is wrong.

No, @taxlady28 is correct.

  • The TurboTax filling window for personal returns (and amendments) goes from January to mid-October of the calendar year that immediately follows the tax year.
  • A 2022 returns could be e-filed from January 2023 through October 2023.
  • To file the 2022 amended tax return please see How do I print and mail a return in TurboTax Desktop for Windows?

Thank you @JohnB5677 and @taxlady28 for bringing my search for e-filing to an end.

Do I just mail form 1040X? - I don't need to include all the other attachments like 8949 etc that weren't affected?

No where does 1040X explicitly state what I owe the IRS - my total refund is $30 less than the original filing.  So I just include a check for $30?

Thanks!

Your welcomed!

  • You will have to return the 1040X, the recalculated 1040, and a copy of the 1099-R.
  • On the 1040X, line 20 is the amount that you owe the IRS.
  • Yes, you can make a check out for the amount on line 20.
  • Please remember to sign both the 1040X and the updated 1040. (Many people forget!).
  • Your Federal tax return goes to a different location depending on the state that you live in.
  • See this list to determine the location for you.   Where to File Paper Tax Returns (irs.gov)
