Does my W-2 have to have a control number for my employer?

The control number for my employer is 0 on my W-2. Im getting an error saying this number is invalid for Electronic filing.

"A Control Number (box D) is used by many payroll departments to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system". It does not have any effect on your W-2 information. You can delete the control number from your W-2 or enter any 5 digit number as control number. See the link below for additional information
