Does my daughter need to file

My Daughter is a full time college student. She received a w2 for $1,154 and a 1099-misc for a $1,000 scholarship (Box 3) she won which she used for tuition. Does she need to file ? I am confused because I saw something about not filing if it was below the standard deduction. Her fed withheld is $0.

Does my daughter need to file

You do not report your daughter's income on your return.

You can claim her as a dependent if she is under 24.

As her income is wages reported on form W-2 added to her scholarship on form 1099-MISC is less than $12,950, she is not required to file a tax return. As she had no taxes withheld, it is not necessary to file a tax return to claim a refund.

I have a similar case, although my daughter did have tax withheld, she qualifies as a dependent child in 2022. Does she file a return to get her money back but I claim her as a dependent child?

Yes, there is a question in the MY INFO section of the return where you can indicate that she is a dependent of someone else. Then she can file a return to receive the amount of her withholding back.
