I began selling products under a sole proprietorship last year and was notified I need to pay a penalty due to failure to pay estimated taxes, which I was unaware of. Am I supposed to pay estimated taxes to the federal government as well as my state of Iowa?
I also received a 1099-NEC due to a separate gig and there was no federal nor state withholdings. Am I supposed to pay estimated taxes on that as well?
Any tips on how to estimate are appreciated as well.

Yes, whenever you are issued or expect to be issued a 1099 NEC, you will owe taxes at the end of the year. This includes both income taxes and self-employment taxes (FICA and MEDICARE). Depending on the amount of taxes owed, you could be assessed an estimated tax penalty if you did not submit enough estimated taxes.
Here is a guide that the IRS publishes. Here is a summary of the guide.
To determine how to figure your estimated taxes, look in the the How to Figure Estimated Taxes section in the guide.
